Do you sense that boot? I feel the coolness as it rises to block the sunshine, an ominous shadow appearing from above. When the wind blows just right, I smell the oiled up leather and feel the stiffness of the laces. On November 4th, 2025, there are local elections happening across the country. While the national news cycle has plenty to keep us distracted, the boot of tyranny is making moves to ensure government power grows at the expense of our freedoms.
On May 18th, 2023 Justice Gorsuch issued a statement (No22-592) which read in part: Since March 2020, we may have experienced the greatest intrusions on civil liberties in the peacetime history of this country. Executive officials across the country issued emergency decrees on a breathtaking scale. Governors and local leaders imposed lockdown orders forcing people to remain in their homes.13 They shuttered businesses and schools, public and private.14 They closed churches even as they allowed casinos and other favored businesses to carry on.15 They threatened violators not just with civil penalties but with criminal sanctions too.16 They surveilled church parking lots, recorded license plates, and issued notices warning that attendance at even outdoor services satisfying all state social-distancing and hygiene requirements could amount to criminal conduct.17 They divided cities and neighborhoods into color-coded zones, forced individuals to fight for their freedoms in court on emergency timetables, and then changed their color-coded schemes when defeat in court seemed imminent.18
I’m not okay with the government stamping on our civil liberties—how about you? The only way we can ensure this kind of response won’t happen again is to be explicit with those running for office that we expect them to follow the Constitution—no matter what fear and propaganda is pushed our way.
I have a very simple question for all candidates running for local office—especially anyone running for City or County Board of Commissioners/ Supervisors and County Sheriffs
1) “Do you believe the COVID response carried out through governmental emergency powers was justified?” (forced lock downs, business closures, “health” edicts including masks and vaccines)
2) If they answer “no,” my follow up: “What would you do differently?”
3) If they give an encouraging answer, my final follow up would be: “Can you share an example where you have demonstrated courage in the past?”
What am I looking for? For starters, do they even acknowledge the Constitution is the law of the land and that elected officials swear an oath to uphold it? Hearing their examples could be very telling in regards to how they define courage and if they can back up talk with action.
It is up to us to set the stage of expectancy. Please join me in taking action NOW.
a) Find out who is running for local office
b) Start with your voter page usually on your Secretary of State office’s website. See if there is a sample ballot that you can download/print. I’ve attached a screenshot of how that looks on the Georgia voter page.
c) Do an internet search for candidate forums in your area. Follow organizations that have hosted events in the past so that you can keep an eye out for new announcements. Plan to show up armed with your questions. Think of the interactions as job interviews and you are the one hiring.
d) Search out candidate contact information including websites, emails, phone numbers, and social media sites. Be sure to follow them and post respectful questions/ comments and try and schedule an in person meeting or send them an email asking them to address your concerns.
You maybe asking yourself, “what does it matter? What can my County Commissioner do when the Federal CDC tells them they have to do something?” Our elected officials—even the local ones, swear an oath to their State and US Constitutions, not to some federal bureaucracy handing down unconstitutional edicts. If it is unconstitutional, our local officials have a duty to interpose and declare “the citizens of our jurisdiction will not be subject to this unconstitutional decree.” A recent example of this can be found with Sheriff John Allen defying an emergency health order to suspend the right to carry firearms in most public places around Albuquerque issued by Governor Grisham of New Mexico in September of 2023. When I brought this to the attention of the chief of staff of our County Public Safety Director, he immediately saw this to be appropriate as the Governor had acted in violation of the 2nd Amendment. Yet, when I attempted to make the connection to the violations to the First and Fifth Amendments (as described in the statement by Gorsuch above) during COVID, he COULD NOT SEE the applicability of the duty of the lesser magistrates.
As Pastor Matt Trewhella explains, we the people also bear a critical role. “If the people don’t act, the lesser magistrate won’t act either. The duty of the people is to rally with the interposing magistrates.” So now, we must ask ourselves, can WE give an example of when WE last demonstrated courage? God is giving us an opportunity right now.
